Today I saw two musical performances given by high school students that led me to believe that the shift from Modernism to Postmodernism. It was the types of performances and the fashion in which the students performed them that led me to the conclusion that these students (and perhaps kids today) intuitively understand Postmodernism and are able to synthesize it, whereas I can simply see, identify, and appreciate it.
The first was a piano performance of Tool’s Lateralus. It was enhanced by words from Timothy Leary, and performed in sort of a classical piano style. Keep in mind, this is a hard-rock/heavy-metal sort of song. It was amazing. The second was by a DJ who had a visual show to go along with the songs he was doing. Among other things, he ended up remixing the hook of Kanye’s Stronger into a whole track, and kept everybody entranced for a good ten minutes with video clips that ranged from movies, anime, CGI, historical footage, etc.
And then there were standing ovations.
Maybe the world isn’t such a bad place afterall.
