You may have heard about this event that happened recently: Members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike, eventually halting the influx of new television shows or movies. I more or less believe this ended up being a good thing for many reasons.
Generally speaking, I don’t watch television. I’ve been known to watch some sporting events, but as far as weekly entertainment, my viewing schedule is filled by one show on one night a week- Lost.
The writers of the show are pretty smart people, and when they realized that the strike was going to persist and that there would be a gap in programming, they wrote the last episode as a mini-finale (in my opinion). Eventually, the strike ended and presumably they set back to work, except, I am not sure they really ever stopped. This week’s show (the first post-strike episode) was perhaps the best episode of any show I have ever seen. The show’s scope is ever widening while maintaining small-scale drama, old elements have reemerged while new ones weave their way into already rich fabric, and many of the characters have subtle (or in some cases, not so subtle) definitions added to them that make you care, all within forty-three minutes and thirteen seconds.
And now I can’t wait until next week.
PS- Incidentally, this week’s episode did not in small part or large, discredit “The Timeloop Theory.” If anything, I believe it more and more.
