A rock cover of Beat It plays in the background in a amusement park outside of Atlanta. The park is full of a variety of people, accurately representing a cross-section of the Greater Atlanta area, and, indeed, our country and world. A kid with black sneakers, long shorts, and a recently won basketball walks by me with his friend.
The beat is in his head, and you can see him processing it. I see this- and keep in mind, this is all happening in a matter of seconds- but I cant decide if he is thinking my thought, “this is a pretty rocking cover,” or its inverse, “how can you cover MJ?” When all of a sudden, he breaks out some footwork adapted from some recent pop-dance song- a quick foot-kick and shuffle- then cycles the ball around his waist, bounces it, and moves on.
It was a perfect example of Imitate, Assimilate, Innovate process I’d been reading about, _at that very moment_.
Life is good.
